Bye bye Slicehost, Hello Linode

In my tradition of switching hosting providers and blogging about it, I've now made the switch from Slicehost to Linode. The bang for the buck is slightly higher- I'm getting 512 MB of RAM instead of 256MB, and 15GB instead of 10GB of available disk space. It also seems a bit more developer friendly with options like PV-GRUB. This move was also relatively hassle-free because the setup and config on the server remains nearly the same.

So how exactly did you do the move then?
An rsync from the running Slicehost machine to the new Linode one?

Which DC are you in? The Atlanta DC Linode uses filters a lot of ports (like IRC) so hopefully you're somewhere else. It's not Linode's fault, but still a pain.

@Dieter_be: I didn't do an rsync of everything; I figured that would have caused a few minor issues with some things. I basically just tarred up /home, /etc, and /srv and cherry-picked accordingly. For postgresql, I just did a pg_dump/pg_restore of the two databases I had. Doing it slightly more manually also gave me a chance to clean up some cruft I had lying around the old server.

@fukawi2: I'm in Dallas, TX so I avoid the port filtering.
